Unfortunately, no. The J-1 teacher exchange program requires participants to be currently employed as lead classroom teachers in a K-12 setting at an accredited school. University instructors and language institute teachers do not meet this requirement, as the program specifically focuses on K-12 educational exchange.
TPG requires educators to have the equivalent of a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Education from an accredited university. This degree must be evaluated and verified by a NACES-member credential evaluation organization such as SpanTran or WES. Degrees in other fields, even with teaching experience, do not meet program requirements.
No, there is no age limit for the J-1 teacher exchange program. As long as you meet all other qualifications including degree requirements, teaching experience, current employment, English proficiency, and cultural exchange interest, you are eligible to apply regardless of age.
No, you do not need to be physically present in your home country to apply. You can be teaching in any country outside of the United States at the time of application. However, you must have completed your required teaching experience at an accredited K-12 school.
Yes. The J-1 program allows your spouse and children under age 21 to accompany you on J-2 dependent visas. TPG does not charge fees for J-2 processing. You'll need to provide proof of sufficient funds to support your family, and J-2 dependents must maintain compliant health insurance at your expense.
A driver's license is not required for the TPG program, but it is highly recommended. Many school districts in the United States are located in areas where public transportation is limited, and having reliable transportation helps with both professional responsibilities and daily living needs.
J-1 exchange visitors are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement. This means you must return home for at least two years after completing your exchange program before you can return to the United States on certain visa types. This requirement is part of U.S. immigration law and ensures completion of the cultural exchange.
We recommend applying between September and January for the following school year, which begins in August or September. This timeline allows adequate time for credential evaluation, visa processing, certification requirements, and school district interview processes before the U.S. school year starts.
