Currently working as a classroom teacher or administrator in a K-12 institution (not a university or language institute).

Do I qualify if I teach at a university or language institute?
Unfortunately, no. The J-1 teacher exchange program requires participants to be currently employed as lead classroom teachers in a K-12 setting at an accredited school. University instructors and language institute teachers do not meet this requirement, as the program specifically focuses on K-12 educational exchange.
What if I don't have a 4-year education degree?
TPG requires educators to have the equivalent of a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Education from an accredited university. This degree must be evaluated and verified by a NACES-member credential evaluation organization such as SpanTran or WES. Degrees in other fields, even with teaching experience, do not meet program requirements.
Is there an age limit for applying to the program?
No, there is no age limit for the J-1 teacher exchange program. As long as you meet all other qualifications including degree requirements, teaching experience, current employment, English proficiency, and cultural exchange interest, you are eligible to apply regardless of age.
Do I need to be in my home country when I apply?
No, you do not need to be physically present in your home country to apply. You can be teaching in any country outside of the United States at the time of application. However, you must have completed your required teaching experience at an accredited K-12 school.
Can I bring my family with me on the J-1 Visa?
Yes. The J-1 program allows your spouse and children under age 21 to accompany you on J-2 dependent visas. TPG does not charge fees for J-2 processing. J-1 exchange visitors are subject to a two-year home-country physical presence requirement. This means you must return home for at least two years after completing your exchange program before you can return to the United States on certain visa types.
